Mahjong (Boxers)

The Material  After considerable research into a sustainable fabrics for our boxers, we got pretty comfortable with Modal (you will too when you try them on). Modal is a semi-synthetic fabric made from the pulp of Beech trees, the manufacturing process uses a closed loop system which limits waste, and which requires much less land area and water use than cotton. The resulting fabric is breathable, absorbent, durable and incredibly soft to touch - perfect qualities for our boxers, oh and it’s also completely biodegradable.  In an attempt to limit plastic packaging, these boxers come in a bamboo tube which can subsequently be used however you like, but work well as a sunglasses case, piggy bank, plant pot etc.  Further details can be found in our Sizing & Product Care section, but we recommend washing in cold water and not tumble drying.  The Design Mahjong is a tile based gamed believed to have originated in mid-19th century Shanghai, and initially played with beautifully engraved bone and bamboo tiles. It spread around the world in the early 1900s, and today many local variations exist.   Much more than a game, Mahjong is built into the fabric of Hong Kong, the shuffling of tiles can often be heard through closed doorways as people gather to play and gamble. It’s popularity with the older generation, offering a forum for social activity and mental stimulation, perhaps partially explains why Hong Kong has one of the highest life expectancies in the world.  Composed of 44 tiles, we have selected some of our favourites on our design, and would encourage those who haven’t played to learn their ‘chows’, 'pungs’ and ‘kongs’ and give this fantastic game a go.
